Roger and Larry
“Inscrutable.”
“What’s ‘inscrutable,’ Larry?”
“Oh hey, Roger. Didn’t see you standing there. How are you this afternoon?”
“Um. Fine. So?”
“So what?”
“What’s inscrutable?”
“Nothing in particular.”
“Eh?”
“No, I mean, many things are inscrutable. Lots of people too. By choice or quirks of nature.”
“Not what I meant.”
“What did you mean?”
“When I walked up, you simply said ‘inscrutable.’ Nothing else. No context.”
“Oh. I was just thinking out loud.”
“Might want to stop that, Larry. Scares a lot of people. Specially them that don’t know you worked with a sharp pencil too long and hurt yourself.”
“Means mysterious, shadowy, confused, or unfathomable, arcane.”
“I know that.”
“Some might not.”
“So, you define a word with equally stilted words?”
“None of those are as you put it, stilted.”
“No. Way you use words sometimes is. You have a habit of bending words. Implying odd meanings. Definitely arcane, as you’d say. Make folks work to understand.”
“Mental calisthenics. Keeps the mind healthy. Encourages the grey cells to dance.”
“Still might want to cut back. But what did you mean this morning?”
“Oh. It’s one of those words that just feels good to say. Doesn’t really need context. Kind of beautiful all by itself.”
“You’re just a tad off-center, Larry.”
“Maybe. But I’m still pretty.”
“Wouldn’t go as far as that, Larry.”
“Unkind, Roger. Why’d you stop by?”
“You said you were thinking of modifying your irrigation system.”
“Am. Add a drip line for the vegetables.”
“Let’s take a look. By the way, inscrutable’s a good word.”
“How’s that?”
“Fits you to a tee.”
